What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a mineral that occurs naturally. Its composition is made up of thin, microscopic fibers that are resistant to heat and chemicals while also being fireproof and strong. These properties made asbestos extremely popular to add to products such as insulation, flooring tiles, building materials, and to car clutches and breaks. It can be added to paper, cloth, plastic, cement, and other materials to enhance their strength and durability.

There are six types of asbestos: chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, tremolite, anthophyllite, and actinolite. They are made of silicate compounds that contain silicon and oxygen. Asbestos has been recognized as a health hazard and is regulated by OSHA and the EPA. The most common place to be exposed to asbestos is in the construction industry and in ship repair. However, you cannot guarantee that your home was built without asbestos and that you are not being exposed to asbestos.

Why is Asbestos Hazardous?

Asbestos can cause a few different illnesses and diseases along with some forms of cancer. When the products that contain asbestos are disturbed, minuscule asbestos fibers are released into the air. They are so small you cannot see them with the naked eye. If they are breathed in, they can get trapped in the lungs and remain there for long periods of time. They can cause inflammation, scar-like tissues known as asbestosis, and lead to serious breathing and health issues.

Other issues asbestos can cause include mesothelioma of the pleura, pleural effusions, pleural plaques, diffuse pleural thickening, ovarian cancer, laryngeal cancer, and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. Although asbestos-related diseases can take decades to develop, you should try to eliminate your exposure to it. No amount of exposure is safe, but the longer a person is exposed, the worse their conditions may get. Types of Asbestos

Although all types of asbestos are toxic, it is good to know what the difference is between each one and how they can be used.

Actinolite Asbestos

Actinolite is dark brown and has needle-like fibers. It is made up of minerals such as calcium, iron, silicon, and magnesium. Actinolite is a rare type of asbestos, but it is used in products such as insulation, cement, paint, sealants, and drywall.

Anthophyllite Asbestos

Anthophyllite can be yellow or brown, commonly containing magnesium and iron. It is the rarest type of asbestos and not known to be used in commercial goods. They can be used in insulation and cement on rare occasions.

Crocidolite Asbestos

Crocidolite is known as the blue asbestos and has fibers that are very fine and sharp. These are the easiest to inhale as they are the smallest and the most brittle. Studies have shown that this is the asbestos that causes the most illnesses.

Amosite Asbestos

Amosite is known as the brown asbestos with brittle, sharp fibers. It is resistant to heat and flame. It is the second most common type of asbestos in the United States. It is most commonly used for fireproofing in construction materials.

Chrysotile Asbestos

Known as the white asbestos, Chrysotile has long, curly fibers. They weave together easily in fabrics. It is the most common asbestos in the United States. About 90-95% of buildings that contain asbestos in the U.S. and Canada contain chrysotile. They can also be found in cement, roofing materials, textiles, asphalt, and more.

Tremolite Asbestos

Tremolite can be dark green or a milky white with straight, sharp fibers that is mainly composed of magnesium. It wasn’t used in manufacturing but more so in paint, sealants, insulation, roofing, plumbing materials, and talc-based cosmetics.

How to Know if You Have Asbestos in Your Home

Vermiculite insulation is the most popular insulation for the use of asbestos. It is made out of phyllosilicate and resembles mica in appearance.
